Internet marketing theory differentiates between two major kinds of promotional strategy - Push marketing and Pull Marketing.
Push Marketing
It is a promotional strategy of company to create consumer demand for a product. Push Marketing is where you develop advertising and promotional strategies to promote the product from begin to producers, wholesalers and consumers. With this type of approach, consumer promotions and advertising are the most probably promotional tools.
A Best example of push marketing is car, where the major brands manufacturers such as Maruti promote their products via retailers such as Car Warehouse. Personal selling and trade promotions are often the most efficient promotional tools for companies such as Maruti - for example offering subsidies on the car to encourage retailers to sell higher prices.
Pull Marketing
Pull marketing is where company develop advertising and promotional strategies to pull customer for a product. A best example of Pull Marketing is : Get coupon of Mcdonald pizza from Times of India newspaper and save up to 50%" or "buy 1 get 1 free", buy 500 ML Pepsi and win movie ticket.
Why you require both
Just one Marketing strategy will not give you full return and satisfaction. I feel you need to equilibrium both strategies to create a great marketing merge that strongly attracts consumers to come through your door. Some consumers respond to one type or other. It will be worth it when both marketing efforts.
